Wheeling Jesuit women picked second in MEC
The college golf season is ready to swing into action and Wheeling Jesuit’s women’s team hopes to pick up where it left off last season. After finishing runnerup last season, the Cardinals were selected as a strong second in the recent 2015 Mountain East Conference preseason poll.
The Cardinals will be led by two-time MEC Player of the Year senior Kasey Frazier. WJU will also have 2014-15 freshman of the Year Bridget Lynn to complete a quality one-two punch at the top of the team’s lineup.
Defending champion Notre Dame College earned nine of the 10 first-place votes for 79 points as the MEC preseason favorite. WJU received the final first-place vote as the clear second-place selection with 74 points.
The University of Charleston was predicted to finish third with 61 points, with Urbana picked to finish fourth (50) and West Virginia Wesleyan picked to finish fifth (49). West Liberty (40), Concord (31), Fairmont State (26), Glenville State (21) and UVa-Wise (19) rounded out the poll.
WJU opens its schedule when it hosts the Northern MEC Tournament on Sept. 6-7 at Moundsville Country Club.
On the men’s side of things, the Cardinals were picked to finish in the middle of the MEC field.
WJU garnered the eighth spot with 53 points in the league rankings. The University of Charleston received seven first-place votes for the preseason favorite with 116 points, while West Liberty with four top votes was a strong second place at 111 points.
WJU will be led by sophomore All-MEC first-team member Eric Dargis along with some new talent.
Two-time defending champion Concord was tabbed third with 91 points and had the remaining first-place vote, narrowly edging out Shepherd with 90 points. Notre Dame was picked fifth (82), followed by Fairmont State (67), West Virginia Wesleyan (59), Wheeling Jesuit (53) and Urbana (51). Glenville State (32), UVa-Wise (29) and West Virginia State (11) completed the poll.

Roger Kupfer fired a 33 to defeat Robbie Evans and Rich Colley, who both carded 35s. Bob Green, Chris Bommer and Art Lightner all shot 36.

Tom Mitchell’s 30 was one stroke better than Dave Stauver. Clark Sambuco was third with a 32.Paul Carney and Tony Campbell had 33s.

- THE INAUGURAL St. C. Junior Sports Scramble will be held at Belmont Hills Country Club on Saturday, Aug. 29 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $100 per player and that includes mulligans and a skins game. The cost includes an Outback catered dinner and beverages on the course during the round. - THE 2nd annual Dominick Nardo Golf Scramble will be held Saturday at Belmont Hills Country Club.
The event will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and the entry fee is $500 per team. Proceeds from the event go toward scholarships to be presented to St. Clairsville High School students in memory of Nardo.

- THE CAMPAIGN for Moving Healthcare Forward will hold a golf scramble at Belmont Hills Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 3 with a shotgun start slated for noon. The event will be a four-person scramble and include skill contests.
Sponsorships are availble for the event and there are four levels, all of which include a team entry in the field.

- The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its ninth annual golf outing on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Fairway River Links.
The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per team of four. The cost includes cart, lunch and beverages during the scramble and a dinner afterwards.
