OFF THE TEE: BHCC Labor Day champions crowned

Belmont Hills Country Club hosted its annual Labor Day tournament on Monday.

The winning team, which posted a score of 106, was comprised of Clay Wood, Chuck Poindexter, Lisa Simon and Rob Anderson.

Second place, which included a score of 107, was posted by the team of Zach Azallion, Tom Hazlett, John Estadt and Pat Estadt.

The third-place team was comprised of Dave Reasbeck, Mike McTeague, Sonny Jacobs and Charles Melchiori. That squad finished with a score of 108.

The closest to the pin winners were Tim Conway Jr., Terry Carson and Lisa Simon.

The event also included a 50-50 raffle that was won by Dave Humphreys.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Bordas & Bordas event was held on Aug. 26. George Melnik prevailed in the medal scoring division with a round of 35. Robbie Evans was second with a 35. Clark Sambuco and Bob Green finished third and fourth, respectively, with rounds of 35. Rounding out the top five was Tony Coppa with a 36.

In the handicap scoring, Bob Hicks prevailed with a 31. Ted Koski had a 32 and Dave Slonaker was third with a 32. Dave Scollick and Terry Younkins rounded out the top five. Both signed for a round of 35.

The Wakim’s Bar event was held on Aug. 30 as an 18-hole tournament. Rich Colley finished as the champion in the medal division with a round of 71. Chris Bommer was second with a 71. Rich Richmond was third with a 72. Evans finished fourth with a 72. A tie for fifth was posted between Bill Caldwell and Gary Mercer with rounds of 72.

Steve Domyan was the champion of the handicap division with a round of 64. Ryan Richmond finished second with a 64. Dennis Porter was third with a 65, while John Bryan was fourth with a 68. Duane Lescalet and Tony Campbell tied for fifth with a 69.

The Glenn and Liz Starkey 2-man scramble was held last Sunday.

The duo of Art Lightner and Roger Kupfer prevailed in the medal standings with a score of 59. Tony Coppa and Doug Miller shot a 61 to finish second. Paul Alig Sr and Paul Alig Jr. were third with a 64. Jim Ennis and Bob Green shot 66 to finish fourth.

Bruce Grover and Shawn Schwertfeger along with Gary Mercer and Chris Bommer shot 68 and tied for fifth.

In the handicap scoring, Terry Younkins and Steve Domyan fired a round of 53, which was two better than the runner-up team of Dick Moore and Mike Crow.

Russ Travis and Dennis Porter were third with a 56, while John Wakim and Bob McLaughlin shot a 56. John Bryan and Tony Lira shot a 58.

COLLEGE GOLF

Wheeling Jesuit’s women’s golf team got its season started with a victory in the Northern Mountain East Conference Tournament title.

Cardinal players captured three of the top five spots on the leaderboard en route to the title and a score of 634, which was 20 shots better than Notre Dame College.

Former Martins Ferry standout Kaitlyn Bliss, who now plays for West Liberty, posted rounds of 79 and 85 en route to a tie for fifth place finish.

The Cardinal men finished fourth in the WJU Invite held at Moundsville Country Club. Stephen Gretchen – a Bishop Donahue grad – finished 14th and second on the Cardinals with rounds of 80 and 75.

SAFFIELD SCRAMBLE

The inaugural Rich Saffield Memorial Golf Scramble, which was originally scheduled for Aug. 1 and then postponed, has been rescheduled.

The event, which will benefit the Saffield Memorial Scholarship at Union Local, will be played as a senior scramble on Tuesday at BecWood Hills Golf Course.

The players in the event must be 55 years and older and the entry fee is $50 per player. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The winning team will receive $500 and there are plenty of large door prizes to be awarded during the event.

SCRAMBLES

  • The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its ninth annual golf outing on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Fairway River Links.

The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per team of four. The cost includes cart, lunch and beverages during the scramble and a dinner afterwards.
