Love, respect spawn Todd Hayes Memorial Pavilion

GLEN DALE -- Todd Hayes was a special baseball player as well as a special individual. Both points were hammered home last Saturday night at an emotional celebration. Hayes was one of the greatest players ever to wear a John Marshall baseball uniform. He was a driving force in the Monarchs’ 1985 state championship season, a season in which he was also named captain of the West Virginia Class AAA all-state baseball team. Fate served up Hayes a cruel pitch, however, in the form of brain cancer. The Glen Dale native battled the deadly disease like he did opposing pitchers -- with ...

Bruney begins building process at Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING — Zac Bruney is navigating in uncharted waters. The Martins Ferry native has a football playing and coaching resume as good as any 35-year-old. It doesn’t include, however, a recipe for how to build a grid program from ground zero. Bruney was named Wheeling Jesuit University’s initial football coach just 13 days ago. It’s a daunting task but one the former Purple Rider and Mount Union quarterbacking star has already started putting a game plan in place. The Cardinals will not field a team in 2017. They will play an exhibition card the following campaign before ...

Teamwork yields smooth OVAC game relocation

MARTINS FERRY - The OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Game has long been associated with Wheeling Island Stadium. Conference officials, however, were forced to move out of their comfort zone with the game's venue this time around. That was a result of a stadium in need of some major repairs, likely closing the facility until October. The Martins Ferry School District made a successful pitch to serve as the alternate site, winning out over several other suitors. Saturday night's game at the Dave Bruney Football Complex marked just the third time the OVAC all-star clash has been played ...

Off the Tee: Oglebay Women’s Club makes donation

The Oglebay Women’s Golf Club is doing its part to help the community and more specifically fellow women. The club donated the proceeds from its annual golf tournament to the YWCA Wheeling and the Tri-County Help Center in St. Clairsville. The event was held in June and it raised $1,000 with a full field of golfers taking part. The $1,000 that the tournament raised was then matched by “passionate sponsor” Niki Mullinix, who is a partner and certified financial planner at Mosaic Wealth Consulting in Canonsburg. During the course of the event, a representative from the YWCA and ...

Magistro to yield Westerville post at season’s end

COLUMBUS -- There comes a time in all coach's lives when they take stock of their future. For John Magistro that day of reckoning has arrived. The prep football coaching icon has decided that this coming season will be his final one as head coach of Westerville Central, a program he resuscitated nine years ago. Magistro has been coaching prep football for close to a half century. He, however, looks and acts decades younger. Burnout is nowhere to be found in his decision. Rather, he is making sure one of his loyal assistants gets his just due. “I’m not tired one bit,” ...

Off The Tee: Timko and Armann claim Member-Guest at BHCC

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — John Timko and Sam Armann teammed up to claim the championship at the 49th annual Member-Guest Invitational at Belmont Hills Country Club following a playoff. Brian Delloma and Ian McClain were second, while Jamie Simon and Bill Piko were third. Six teams started the playoff, with the final three duos advancing to No. 5. From there, Timko/Armann and Delloma/McClain advanced to No. 9. There, they tied, moving action back to No. 1. At the first hole, Armann nailed a birdie to give he and Timko the title, ending Delloma and McClain’s one-year reign as ...
