Maynard moves on; Barton splits

Maynard advanced to the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Baseball League playoffs Sunday, while Barton and Marshall County split a doubleheader to force a third game tonight in Crescent.

Maynard, the No. 3 seed, tallied four runs in the first inning and that was all righthander Greyson Loweecy needed in a 11-2 rout of visiting sixth-seeded Hannibal on Firemen’s Field inside the Maynard Community Park.

Ryan Jarvie drew a bases-loaded walk and Dylan Busby followed with a two-run single. Jarvie would chug around the bases when the ball was misplayed in the outfield for a 4-0 lead.

Loweecy fanned nine, including the first seven looking, and walked one in six innings. However, his most impressive stats came at the plate where he drove in four runs with an RBI single in the third that bumped the count to 5-0. He then cleared the bases with a triple to right-center in the sixth that capped the outburst.

“I want to thank my nine guys that came here to play today,” Maynard manager Laney Simone Sr. said. “Without them, we don’t play, we don’t win and we don’t move on.”

Dustin Hynes and Nike Patrone evenly divided four singles for Maynard (13-7). Jarvie drove in two runs and score four despite not getting a base hit. D.J. Busby had a run-scoring single.

Logan Nippert singled twice for the Pirates (5-13), who forfeited Game 1 due to not enough players. Cole Isaly drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

Brennan Binni took the loss. He struck out seven in four innings.

Maynard will now wait for its next opponent.

Marshall County 6, Barton 4

Barton 8, Marshall County 4

AT CRESCENT, after the fifth-seeded Monarchs (8-9) stunned the No. 4 Braves (9-8) with five runs in the top of the seventh in the opener, Barton responded with five runs in the first two innings of Game 2 to earn the split.

Former Bridgeport three-sport standout Bailey McGrath went the distance on the hill. The righty fanned five and scattered half-a-dozen hits. However, he issued eight free passes, including four in the sixth when Marshall County added three hits to score a trio of runs that sliced the deficit to 6-4.

Barton added two in the top of the seventh for some insurance.

Dillon Ketter, a former St. C. product, knocked in three runs with a pair of singles for the Braves. Zack Melton singled twice to plate a run. Matt Withrow also drove in a run.

“We should’ve won both games, but I’m proud of the way the guys battled back and fought,” Barton manager Billy Timko said. “We need to get another win tomorrow (tonight).

“Bailey pitched a heckuva game in really his first outing of the summer,” Timko added. “We needed someone to step up and give us a good effort because we’re a little short on pitching right now. Bailey did just that.”

The Monarchs and Braves will meet again on Henning Field tonight at 6.

Top-seeded Shadyside is still awaiting its next opponent after receiving a first-round bye. Also, No. 2 Wheeling and seventh-seeded Belmont County played Game 2 of their best-of-3 series Sunday night at Union Local High School, but no details were provided. The Cardinals won Game 1 over the Cubs by an 8-0 count.

The semifinals are scheduled to start Wednesday at the higher-seeded team’s field. They are a best-of-3.
