ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The St. Clairsville volleyball team team figured one comeback deserved another Tuesday night.

After falling behind two sets to none against Union Local, the Red Devils rallied from down six in the fourth set then scored six straight points in the fifth in posting a thrilling 18-25, 26-28, 25-20, 25-17, 15-8 victory in a prep volleyball battle of unbeatens.

“We had talked (Monday) how it was going to be a hard match,” Red Devils head coach Christa Truchan said. “Union Local, we knew, was going to be very disciplined.

“It was little warm in the gym … for both teams.”

The action was just as hot on John Jenkins Court, where the Red Devils and Jets staged an epic early-season Buckeye 8 battle, capped by a final set that saw St. C. race out to a 2-0 lead.

Casey Kildow made the score 2-1 when she sent a shot off a St. Clairsville player. The Jets tied the set moments later and went up one when Abby Shepherd rifled over a shot the Red Devils couldn’t handle.

From there, it was all St. Clairsville.

The Red Devils scored half a dozen points, capped by a shot off the hands of Paige Sefsick making the score 8-3. The Jets never got to within four the rest of the match.

“(Tuesday), they were better,” a disappointed Union Local head coach Kaye Sechrest said. “It was just one of those matches. We should’ve had it, but we let it get away from us and we couldn’t get it back.”

Things started to get away from the Jets in Set 4. Trailing 7-1, Truchan called time and made it clear to her squad what was at stake.

“We just reminded them how they needed to play and what they needed to do,” she said. “Just play point by point. Just start hitting the ball. Start playing our style of ball.”

And that’s what the Red Devils did. Starting with an ace, the Red Devils turned a 14-8 deficit into a 20-14 lead. It was just the momentum they needed going into the fifth set.

“They took it and ran with it,” said Truchan, whose squad jumped out to an 11-1 lead in Set 3. “This was a huge character-building experience and, hopefully, a huge confidence booster to them to realize they can continue to just take things game by game.”

Union Local controlled Set 1 before overcome five ties to claim Set 2.

St. Clairsville went ahead 24-21, but the Jets rallied to tie things at 24-24 before winning.

“I have to credit them,” Truchan said. “Their defensive specialists and libero were very disciplined. They were getting us out of sync. UL did a great job. It was a great match.”

Kildow paced the Jets with 13 assists and nine kills. Shepherd had seven kills and six assists, while Emma Knox had five assists. Sydney Lohr, Laryssa Brandon and Keira Gregor had seven, six and four kills, respectively.

Alexa Binger had 10 kills and five blocks for St. Clairsville. Katie Miller added 22 assists, while Kenzie Schoolcraft and Keri Klinkoski had seven and six kill,s respectively. Sefsick finished with six kills and 12 digs.
