Area golfers come up short of state berth

Despite a couple of strong showings, nary a local player was able to advance to the OHSAA State Golf Championship.

The Division II District Tournament unfolded under ideal weather conditions at Eaglesticks Golf Club.

St. Clairsville, which has been playing well all season, finished second to champion Coshocton and missed qualifying to the state tourney by two shots.

The Red Devils posted a solid 330, but the Redskins signed for a 328.

Coach Caden Myers’ squad was led by senior Jacob Jeffries’ 79. Classmate Brendan Vucelich, who was the sectional champion at Cadiz last week, fired an 83. Broc Crist and Will Foster rounded out the scorers for St. C.. Each signed for an 84.

Harrison Central finished with a 387. Posting the low number for the Huskies was Samuel Santille, who carded an 88.

Martins Ferry sophomore Luke Krol narrowly missed his first state berth. He finished third overall and second among those in the mix for the lone individual qualifying spot. He posted a solid round of 78.

DIVISION III

The small-school district tournament was also staged Monday. It was held on the challenging River Greens layout.

Barnesville finished fourth in the team rankings with a 339, trailing champion Hiland by 33 shots.

The Shamrocks were led by junior Payne Johnson, who signed for a solid 77.

He was one shot behind Strasburg’s Mitch Niedenthal who garnered the lone individual qualifying spot.

Jim Byler, Carter Wells and Tyler Willison rounded out the scorers for the Shamrocks.

Bridgeport’s Kevin Herink wrapped up his prep career with a round of 87.
