NEFFS — Allan Olexa, for just one week, is turning in his running shorts and shoes for a different type of uniform.

The 67-year-old Neffs resident, and his daughter Abby, have been chosen to serve as greeter’s at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Peachtree Street in Atlanta which will be host to the New England Patriots and officials from the NFL offices during Super Bowl Week.

“Thirty thousand people applied and both my daughter and I were selected,” Allan said. “They are volunteer positions with the Host Committee. We will be doing everything from directing visitors to their destinations, welcoming them to the city and anything else that they might need to feel comfortable.”

Olexa, an avid road racer, and his daughter, who works in Convention Services for the hotel, will be working Thursday through Sunday from noon until 5 p.m.

“The Hyatt is one of the hubs of activity for that week,” he noted. “The New England Patriots and officials from the NFL offices will be staying there, it will be a very busy place.”

While admitting his interest in sports has declined as the years have gone by, he is a fan of all three teams in the tri-state area.

“I’m not a big NFL fan, but I do still follow the three local teams in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh,” he said. “I want all three to do well, but if it comes down to just one it’s the Steelers. I would like to see Cleveland be competitive again.”

So, who does he prefer when New England meets the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Feb. 2 in Super Bowl LIII inside Mercedes Benz Stadium?

“I think I’m like so many other fans. I don’t care for the Patriots. I would like to see the Steelers stay ahead of them in championships,” he declared. “New England is known for ‘Spygate’ and ‘Deflategate.’ I’d like to see someone else win.”

Olexa said applications for the volunteer host committee positions were available last spring.

“Abby actually went in for a face-to-face interview while I sent a video application by email,” he offered. “We both got selected.”

He said all greeters have been given instructions on certain things to look for. He said there is one area that security forces are stressing is human trafficking.

“They want us to be very watchful for anything out of the ordinary,” he said. “There are going to be so many people down there.”
