Caldwell holds off Shadyside in D-IV

SHADYSIDE — Shadyside saw a 16-13 advantage after one quarter go to a 36-27 deficit at the half as visiting Caldwell shot the lights out early inside the Tigers Den Tuesday night.

Clark Jennings netted 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first 16 minutes and the No. 9 Redskins (13-10) held off a late run by the eighth-seeded Tigers (12-11) for a 69-59 Division IV sectional tournament victory.

Caldwell knocked down 11 shots from beyond the three-point arc, including half-a-dozen by Jennings who had five before the halftime break.

“They had two guys (making those threes) in the first half and we didn’t recognize it as a unit as to who the two guys were that were making those shots,” veteran Shadyside head coach Ed Andes advised. “In the second half we made good adjustments, but then we missed a lot of wide-open shots and had some that went in and came out.”

A 14-4 run by the Redskins to end the first half was fueled by seven points from Logan Heller. Jennings connected on his fifth trey just before the halftime buzzer.

“We’re pretty perimeter-oriented. We lost our point guard about a month ago, so we’ve kind of been transitioning to learn how to play without him,” Caldwell head coach Clint Crane said. “We kind of go as we shoot the ball. If we shoot the basketball well we’re pretty solid. I know that’s the case with most teams, but that’s (perimeter shooting) kind of our strong suit.”

For the game, the Redskins shot 50 percent (11-22) from downtown, compared to 8-for-25 for the Tigers.

“Obviously, Shadyside is a very well-coached team. He’s one of the best (head coaches),” Crane said of Andes. “They’ve got a lot of young, skilled kids and this is a tough place to play. I’m really happy for my guys. This is a good win for us.”

With the triumph, Caldwell will get a shot at the best.

“That’s the reward. We get to go play Hiland, the No. 1 team (Div. 4) in the state,” Crane said with a smile. “We went on that side of the bracket for that reason. We wanted to see what’s it all about. Win or lose. Whether they kick our butts or we go up there and give them all they want, and maybe beat them. We’ll see. That’s the plan.”

The Tigers used a 13-5 run to end the third quarter, slicing the margin to 54-48 as junior Kelly Hendershot had eight of his team-best 23. The hosts got to within four, 56-52, early in the final frame, but Caldwell sealed the deal with a 13-2 spree.

Andes was proud of the way his team went down fighting.

“We battled back and were right there, but I think we ran out of gas,” he added. “They came to our place and outplayed us in the beginning. We got in that hole and just couldn’t overcome it. But, overall, with the group we had in the summer to where we are now, I’m very pleased with this group. We ended up with a winning season, naturally we wanted to win tonight, but, overall, I can’t complain. It was an enjoyable season.”

Freshman Korey Beckett added 12 markers — all on 3s. Senior Collin Holmes finished with nine. Hendershot also pulled down seven rebounds, while senior Anthony Coggins and frosh Mason VanNest evenly divided a dozen.

Heller backed Jennings’ effort with 17. Zeke Liston added 10 and Robbie Cool nine. Heller had nine rebounds and Jennings eight.

Caldwell charted nine turnovers, one more than Shadyside.
