Wheeling Park sweeps regional track crowns

WHEELING– It was a clean sweep for Wheeling Park as both the boys and girls track teams claimed the Class AAA Region One title Wednesday at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

Many Wheeling Park athletes along with a handful of other local athletes punched their ticket to the state meet with a top three finish.

On the boys side, Ronnie Saunders claimed two individual titles in the 1600 (4:31.17) and 800 (1:59.30).

Jermain Snodgrass swept the throwing events as he took home the top prize in the discus (120-feet-06) and shout put (48-02.50).

Justin LeVelle, Sincere Sinclair, Shaheed Jackson Mayfield and Torrence Walker were forces to be reckoned with running away with two relay wins in the 4×100 (43.94) and 4×200 (1:31.95). LeVelle also claimed the 100 title (11.14) while Walker won the 200 (22.49). Walker and Jackson Mayfield were also on the winning 4×400 team with Dakota Scott and Eric Estep (3:31.95).

Scott claimed the individual 400 title (52.33).

Rounding out the winners for the boys were Christian Sorge (pole vault, 13-01.00) and the shuttle hurdle team of DeVaughn McWhorter, Andrew Glass, David Fox and Kai Schultz (1:01.75).

Also receiving an automatic bid to state were Saunders (second, 3200); Estep (second, 400); Glass (second, 110 hurdles and third, 300 hurdles); Fox (third, 110 hurdles); Sinclair (third, 100 and third, 200); LeVelle (second, 200); Vincent DiProsperis (third, 800) and Tristen Bittner (third, shot put).

John Marshallís Brennen Wright grabbed an automatic bid with placing third in the high jump.

On the girls side, Aubrey Wiethe claimed the 100 hurdles (15.66) title along with the 300 hurdles (45.45). Amari Poole also secured a pair of gold medals in the 200 (26.53) and 100 (12.55).

Wiethe and Poole were both on the winning 4×100 team (49.99) with Aaliyah Speights and Abby Snedeker.

Poole and Snedeker along with Marlee Porter and Alex Knight claimed the 4×200 title (1:47.63). Wiethe, Knight, Porter and Tasia Walker timed in first in the shuttle hurdles (1:05.03).

Cheyenne Nash took home the gold in the shot put (36-11.25).

Other Patriots receiving automatic bids were Walker (second, high jump); Knight (third, 100 hurdles); Snedeker (second, 100 and third, 200); Porter (second, 300 hurdles); Speights (second, long jump); Brady Browning (second, pole vault) and the 4×400 team of Porter, Knight, Maya Taggart and Abby Barki (second).

“I am ecstatic with how our boys and girls performed as a team,” Wheeling Park coach Bryan Arbes said. “We PRed in just about everything and are finally bringing it together. We still have room to improve and look forward to the state meet.”

John Marshall’s Zara Zervos (third, 400); Brooke’s Rachel Clayton (third, high jump) and Yazmin Island (third, long jump) also received individual automatic bids.

John Marshall’s Claudia Callahan, Emilee Kettler, Tahya Stewart and Emily Harr placed third in both the 4×100 and shuttle hurdles.
