Buckeye Local, Union Local looking for first victory

UNION LOCAL wide receiver Hunter McCort runs the ball during last week’s game at Monroe Central. The Jets will look to bounce back Friday when they visit Buckeye Local.

YORKVILLE — A pair of teams looking for their initial victory of the season will collide at World War II Memorial Stadium as the second week of the high school football season plays out this weekend.

Buckeye Local entertains Union Local Friday night after suffering a 33-8 setback at Barnesville in its opener. The Jets, meanwhile, were blanked, 21-0, by Monroe Central.

The Panthers haven’t won a game since week 8 of the 2014 campaign — a stretch of 43 contests — when they defeated homestanding East Liverpool, 22-12. The Potters finished 0-10.

Buckeye Local last beat Union Local in 2012, 18-16, in Morristown.

All games have 7 p.m. kickoffs.

Barnesville at Meadowbrook

At Byesville, the Bill Dowler Memorial Trophy will be up for grabs when a pair of unbeatens clash on the artificial surface at Eugene Dom Capers Field in Guernsey County.

The Shamrocks are coming off the aforementioned triumph over Buckeye Local, while the Colts blanked John Glenn, 14-0.

Barnesville hasn’t won in the series since 2016 when it prevailed 56-26.

Meadowbrook won, 26-7, last season.

Harrison Central at Toronto

At Clarke Hinkle Field in Toronto, this contest could be billed as “The Anthony Hayes Bowl” as the Huskies head coach served as head coach of the Red Knights for a couple of weeks prior to last season before being named at Harrison Central.

This will be the first time the two teams have met on the gridiron. However, Toronto did have a pretty good rivalry with Cadiz before the Harrison consolidation.

Harrison Central fell 49-13 to invading Garaway last week on the artificial turf at Wagner Field. Toronto also lost, 26-15, to Ohio 7 rival, Wellsville.

River at Southern Local

At Salineville, the Pilots are seeking their first win after falling to visiting Bellaire, 28-6, at Martin Flannery Field in Hannibal.

The Indians were 37-12 victors over Edison in their opener.

Frontier at Beallsville

At Beallsville, the Blue Devils are looking for their first ‘W’ after a 28-25 setback to Miller in week 1. The Cougars, meanwhile, throttled Paden City, 61-6.

Beallsville will dedicate its field to longtime head coach Dave Caldwell during pre-game festivities.

Newcomerstown at Buckeye Trail

At Old Washington, another battle of unbeatens plays out at the Baker Athletic Complex when the Warriors host the Trojans.

Buckeye Trail slipped past Caldwell, 12-8, in its opener, while Newcomerstown ran past Fairfield Christian, 41-3.

SATURDAY

Garaway at Bellaire

At Nelson Field, the Big Reds will look to go 2-0 after downing River last week. The Pirates routed Harrison Central.

This will be the first meeting between the two squads.

Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m.

Shadyside vs. Mogadore

At Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium in New Philadelphia, a battle of perennial state powers will unfold as the Tigers and Wildcats face-off for the first time in the regular season.

The two last met in 2010 when Mogadore posted a 28-13 nod in the Division VI, Region 21 championship contest.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Monroe Central vs. Bridgeport

The two small schools will also be meeting for the first time when they meet on the artificial surface inside the Dave Bruney Football Complex in Martins Ferry.

The Seminoles won their debut last week, 21-0, over Union Local, while the Bulldogs dropped theirs, 21-18, to Madonna.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
