Another high school golf season has come and gone.

It was a campaign that navigated its way through the murky waters dealing with COVID-19 and stretched to the final Ohio weekend as Barnesville’s Carter Wells advanced to the state tournament.

In between, several impressive performances were put forth by the boys and girls players in the area.

The annual team consists of seven boys and three girls from throughout the T-L coverage area.

Wells has been named the team’s captain.

Here’s a capsule look at the honorees:

CARTER WELLS, Barnesville — This Shamrock junior had a season that took him places no other Barnesville golfer has ever gone.

Wells qualified for the Division II state golf tournament last weekend near Columbus after placing second at the district. He finished 29th in the state with rounds of 87 and 79. Prior to that, he was the OVGL medalist and runner-up at the OVAC. He also finished second at the district tournament among individuals. All told, he finished with a 9-hole average of 37.8.

“Carter’s work ethic is second to none as he lives on the course,” Barnesville head coach Jerry Robinson said. “He was consistently good all year, but took his game to another level in the postseason. What separates Carter from others is his play around the greens and his ability to perform under pressure. He had a historic season.”

WILL FOSTER, St. Clairsville — This Red Devil junior had a brilliant season in serving as the St. C. leader all fall.

Foster earned All-OVGL, All-Buckeye 8 and All-OVAC honors and finished the season with a scoring average of 38. He was also an individual district qualifier and missed playing in the state tournament by a shot.

“Will has the pressure of knowing that if our team is going to be successful, he needs to be at his best each time out,” St. Clairsville head coach Ryan Clifford said. “He handles that (pressure) with incredible maturity. I lean on him a ton and, at times, he’s more of an assistant coach than he is our number one golfer.”

SAM SANTILLE, Harrison Central — This senior put the finishing touches on a brilliant prep career with yet another fine season for Coach Todd Dunlap’s team.

Santille finished with a scoring average of 39.9, which ranks as the second-lowest in Harrison Central’s history. He led the team in pars, birdies and scoring average. His 165 holes played at par or better are tops in Huskies history.

Santille qualified once again to the district tournament, becoming a four-time participant in the event. He was the Buckeye 8 runnerup and three times earned a spot on the All-League team.

“Sam is the epitome of a student-athlete,” Dunlap said. “He’s a good student, a good golfer and an even better young man. All who meet Sam have nothing but praise and admiration for how he handles himself. He’s been an absolute pleasure to coach for the last six years and I have confidence he will do great things in life.”

LUKE KROL, Martins Ferry — This senior standout was a model of consistency for Coach Mike Beck’s team.

Krol finished with a 38 average for 9 holes during his senior season. He was the medalist or runner-up medalist in every 9-hole match the Purple Riders played. He was the Buckeye 8 champion for the second straight season.

He also earned All-OVGL honors and qualified for the third straight season to the district tournament.

“Luke was totally dedicated to golf,” Beck said. “He worked all year round to improve and his high-school career and accolades show that it paid off. He had one of the most impressive and decorated careers in our school’s history. We’ll definitely miss him.”

SAUL CRIST, St. Clairsville — This junior put forth a solid break-out season for the Red Devils this season.

Crist finished with a 9-hole average of 41 and earned a spot on the All-OVGL, All-OVAC and All-Buckeye 8 squads.

“Saul made huge strides this season,” Clifford said. “He went from being one of the best golfers on our team to being one of the best in the area. His steady demeanor allows him to be consistent each night out.”

ZANDER POTTS, Monroe Central — This Seminoles freshman had an impressive rookie campaign for head coach Jared Highman.

Potts averaged 42.1 for 9 holes and 84.4 for 18 holes this season, accumulating 12 birdies and making 48 pars.

He earned a spot on the All-OVAC, All-OVGL and All-MOVL teams.

“Zander played well throughout the season,” Highman said. “Zander’s scores helped out the overall team score and helped us secure our first MOVL title. I’m proud of him for the season he had.”

BRADEN “BEEZER” PORTER, Union Local — This sophomore showed flashes of what could be to come this season for Coach Zach Delman’s team.

Porter was the Jets’ top player and finished with a 9-hole average of 43 and an 18-hole average of 86.4. He was named to the All-Buckeye 8 team.

“Beezer is a natural athlete who is very smooth and has a chance to be one of the top golfers in the area the next few years,” Delman said. “He’s made steady progress, had a great offseason and took his game to another level. He’s shown flashes of being a steady 70s golfer, but just needs to continue to improve his short game. I look forward to watching him grow as a golfer for the next few years.”

BREANNA FLOOD, Barnesville — This Shamrock sophomore had a strong season despite battling through an injury.

Flood averaged 45.9 for 9 holes and was named to the Ohio Valley Athletics girls All-Tournament team. She had her strongest showing in the sectional where he missed becoming a district qualifier by one shot.

“Breanna suffered an injury which caused her to get off to a slow start, but by the end of the season, she was playing her best golf,” Robinson said.

“She’s very coachable and has a bright future ahead.”

BROOKE CHAMBERLAIN, St. Clairsville — This junior had a solid season, playing both with the Red Devils boys and girls squads this season.

Chamberlain averaged a 42 for 9 holes. She was the runnerup at the Ohio Valley Athletics girls tournament.

“Brooke’s game is very steady, so there are not many surprises in her game,” Clifford said. “She shows up, plays her game and is not bothered by anything around her. When she plays with the boys, she has a lot of pressure on her to be our third score and it doesn’t faze her at all.”

GRACE GREEN, Shadyside — This junior had an impressive season for Coach Dave Ragase’s team.

Green, who earned her third letter, averaged a 48 for 9 holes and finished third in the girls portion of the OVGL. She was also fourth in the Division III sectional, narrowly missing a trip to the district tournament.

“Grace is an athlete that all coaches dream of having,” Ragase said. “It was challenging for her because she had to play most of the boys matches, but she handled it well.”
