Martins Ferry, Monroe Central open with victories

MARTINS FERRY — The homesteading Purple Riders used a strong run in the second and third quarter and never looked back en route to a 59-32 victory in a mutual season opener with Buckeye Local.

The Purple Riders were led by freshman Danielle Lude, who posted 22 points. Junior Allarah Jones added 21 points.

Buckeye Local was paced by Megan Valuska’s 10 points.

Monroe Central 57, River 56

WOODSFIELD — Despite a chilly 28% effort at the foul line, the homesteading Seminoles posted a season-opening victory over county-rival River.

The Seminoles were led by Haylyn Hiles’ 20 points. Kalista Friday added 15 points, six rebounds and four steals.

River was led by Kesley Harlan, who poured in 17. Hannah Raper added 12, while Lexi Piatt donated 10.

East Liverpool 51, Bellaire 19

EAST LIVERPOOL — The Potters owned a 20-9 lead at halftime and never looked back en route to the victory.

The Big Reds were led by Jenna Miller and Lizzie McAninch’s four points.

Claymont 58, Harrison 53, OT

URICHSVILLE — Harrison Central and Claymont needed overtime, but in the end the Mustangs pulled out the victory after the Huskies missed two shots at the end of regulation that could have won it.

Harrison Central was led by junior McKayla Dunkle, who had 22 points.
