Martins Ferry, Shadyside, Beallsville post softball sweeps
WHEELING — Martins Ferry put the finishing touches on earning the top seed in the OVAC Class 3A tournament with an impressive sweep of Linsly Saturday.
The Purple Riders, who are now 20-4 on the season, recorded a 12-2 victory in the opener and followed that with a 13-1 romp.
In the opener, Lauren McFarland was sharp in the circle. She also drove in a run with a single.
The big offense came from Taylor Bell. She came up a triple shy of the cycle and drove in three. Hunter Pollock had three singles and a RBI. Ava Doyle had two doubles, a single and plated three. Maria Clark had a RBI and Ella McFarland had a double and a single.
In the second game, the Purple Riders played long ball. They connected on three more home runs, including a pair by talented frosh Danielle Lude. She finished with five RBI.
Pollock went deep as well. She also had two singles and drove in three. Clark had a double, single and a RBI. Bell added a RBI double and Doyle had a single, double and RBI. Ella McFarland had a double and RBI. Shelby Thomas returned to the lineup and had a single and RBI. Kelsi Gillespie, who picked up the win in the circle, had a RBI single.

ELM GROVE — Shadyside locked up its spot in the OVAC Class 2A tournament with a doubleheader sweep of struggling Wheeling Central Saturday.
The Tigers cruised in the opening game behind a home run, double and three RBI from sophomore Gentry Brown. Bella Honeywell had a single, home run and three RBI.
Senior Kylie Jo Baker had a single and two RBI, while Rylee Fulton, who was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts, had a single, double and RBI. Mady Violet also had two singles and two RBI.
In the second game, the Tigers pounded out 18 hits.
Baker did a big portion of the damage with three doubles, a single and five RBI. Brown doubled home a pair of runs. Honeywell had a single, double and two RBI. Fulton had three singles, a double and two RBI. Violet had a single, triple and two RBI. Mackenzie Zdunczyk had a double and RBI.
Cambridge 10, Union Local 5
MORRISTOWN — The Bobcats completed the season sweep of the Jets thanks to a pair of big innings Saturday.
Cambridge blew open a one-run game with a five spot in the top of the fifth and never looked back.
Union Local was led by Casey Kildow’s two singles. Hannah Merritt had a single, triple and a RBI. Rylee Magnani had a pair of singles and a RBI.
Harrison Central 21, Steubenville CC 3
STEUBENVILLE — The Huskies bounced back from a Friday loss to steamroll the Crusaders in five innings.
The Huskies offense was led by Tristen Kovarik. She had a single, triple and drove in five runs. Britton Positano had a single and three RBI. Lexi Ferguson added two doubles, a single and three RBI. Jenna Young also had a single and three RBI. Lexi Clelland drove in two with a double.
Beallsville 11, Bridgeport 1
Beallsville 15, Bridgeport 1
BEALLSVILLE — Beallsville made quick and easy work of winless Bridgeport en route to a doubleheader sweep Saturday in Monroe County.
In the first game, Trinity Abbott was sharp in the circle with seven strikeouts. She also had a RBI single.
Harley Nalley provided a bulk of the offense with a home run, single and two RBI. Kinley Hughes had a triple, single and two RBI. Terra Shriver had a single, double, triple and drove in three.
Riley Bell drove in the lone Bulldogs run.
In the second game, the hits kept coming for the Blue Devils.
Hannah Phillips had three singles and two RBI. Abbott had a double, triple and two RBI. Hughes had a double and two RBI. Makenna Phillips had a double and RBI. Sydnee Otto had a RBI triple. Sidney Vanhorn had a pair of doubles and a RBI. Najea Holt had two singles and four RBI, while Leah Trigg had a double, single and RBI.
Brooke Stewart had RBI single to pace the Bulldogs. Markie McCormick had a double.

NEW CONCORD — St. Clairsville’s skid continued Saturday when it dropped a pair of road decisions to the Lil Muskies.
Hannah Bendle had a key role in both wins for John Glenn. She had a day that included two pitching wins, two home runs, two doubles, two triples, a single and 11 total RBI.
St. Clairsville received a home run, single and RBI from Abby Salisbury in the opening game. Jenna Jaskowiak had a double, single and RBI in the opener. Makenna Moran also hit a home run for the Devils. Paris Stachyra had a double and three RBI.
In the second game, Rachel Finnical and Stachyra had two singles. Dekotah Namack drove in a run.
BASEBALL
Edison 4, Martins Ferry 3
MARTINS FERRY — Edison pushed three runs across in the top of the seventh to stun the Purple Riders Saturday high atop the Purple City.
The Wildcats got a two-run double from Matt Parsons and RBI single from Eli Wilson to fuel the rally.
The Purple Riders (7-7) received a single, double and RBI from Kameron Hughes. Colten Reddinger had a double.
