Barnesville blanks Central in baseball; River softball wins

BARNESVILLE — The Shamrocks got a solid tuneup before Saturday’s OVAC semifinal with a 2-0 victory against Wheeling Central.

Barnesville received sterling pitching from Brady Wildes, who went the distance with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Jake Edwards came through with two singles and a RBI. Jeremy Hunkler had a single and RBI.

Harrison Central 10, Bellaire 4

NEFFS — Invading Harrison Central scored five runs in the first two innings and never looked back en route to the win over the Big Reds in a Buckeye 8 crossover game.

Skylar Mazeroski earned the win on the mound with five strikeouts and two walks. He also had a single.

Sophomore Treston Nemeth led the offense with a home run, double and single as well as three RBI. Kobe Mitchell had a single and two RBI. Caleb Blawut had a pair of singles and two RBI.

Bellaire received three singles from Jake Heatherington. Chance Maffe had two singles, a double and a RBI. Kaden Banal had a single and two RBI.

Union Local 3, Edison 2

MORRISTOWN — Tre Rex and Tyler Gummere combined on a two-hitter and struck out 13 as Union Local scored early and held off visiting Edison late in a 3-2 high school baseball victory Friday.

Rex started and worked into the fifth. The lefty fanned 10 and walked half-a-dozen. Gummere earned the save with a trio of punchouts.

Evan White and Dylan Higgenbotham each drove in a run with a single for Union Local. Luke Merritt doubled.

SOFTBALL

Bellaire 13, Buckeye Local 3

ST. JOE — Bellaire scored eight runs in the opening three innings and cruised to a victory against struggling Buckeye Friday.

The Big Reds offense was led by Kaylan Brown who had two singles, a double and three RBI. Allie Ault drove in three runs and had a single. Gianna Schmidt had two singles and a RBI. Sophie Porter singled home a run. Lizzie McAninch had a triple.

River 11, Valley 2

AT PINE GROVE, the Pilots (17-3) completed their tuneups prior to today’s OVAC Class 2A championship contest with Caldwell by thumping the host Lumberjills.

Kelsi Harlan drove in two runs with two singles and a double for River. Hannah Raper slugged a two-run double while Emily Smith singled twice to plate three runs. Courtney Pittman doubled in a run and Paige Barkes singled and doubled.

Josie Reed went the distance inside the circle, striking out three and walking one. She allowed four hits.

The Pilots and Redskins meet at 1 p.m. on Ben’s Field at the J. B. Chambers I-470 Sports Complex.

Harrison Central 10, Toronto 0

AT CADIZ, the Huskies (16-5) continued to rebound from their OVAC Class 4A semifinal setback to Edison with a blanking of the visiting Red Knights high stop Sally Buffalo Park at the Cravat Coal’s Cadiz Girls Softball Complex.

Tristen Kovarik earned the win inside the circle with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks. She permitted just two singles and helped herself at the plate with a double and two runs batted in.

Maddy Butler singled twice and doubled to drive in a run. Jenna Young had a pair of suicide-squeeze bunts for ribbies and Danyel Beadling singled in a run.

The Huskies are back in action Wednesday in the Buckeye 8 second-place game.
