Coal Bucket battle highlights week 6 slate

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The battle for the “Coal Bucket” highlights the sixth week of high school football season Friday night when St. Clairsville welcomes neighboring Harrison Central to Red Devil Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30.

St. Clairsville leads the all-time series 18-4, including 35-20 last year at Wagner Field in Cadiz.

Five other contests are featured, with four being played on Friday and the other on Saturday night. All have 7 o’clock starts.

Harrison Central (2-3)

at St. Clairsville (4-1)

The Huskies started off 2-0 but are currently mirred in a three-game losing skid that has seen them lose to Bellaire, Union Local and Hawken — the Big Reds and Jets are still undefeated.

Harrison Central has been hit hard with injuries but seniors Nathan Bertolino and Jonathan Vermillion have been stalwarts.

The Red Devils have bounced back nicely from their lone reversal — 18-14 to Wheeling Park. They have rolled past South Allegheny (Pa.), Martins Ferry and Linsly, which replaced Indian Creek due to COVID-19.

St. Clairsville is led by balanced offensive and defensive attacks, while the special teams as been just that — special. Tailback Jacob Jordan has made a habit of finding the end zone so far, while Brennan Stout heads up the defense.

Westinghouse (3-0)

at Union Local (4-0)

The Bulldogs roll into Jets Stadium in Morristown with a perfect mark that includes wins over Seton LaSalle (38-0), Brashear (35-0) and Taylor Allderdice (41-12). They had a game with Ohio power Kirtland canceled.

Running back Malik Harris had 146 yards and two TDs on 11 carries last week. Quarterback Keyshawn Morsillo passed for a TD and ran for another.

Union Local’s offensive is averaging 40 points a contest and has scored 40-or-more three times, but the Jets opponents are just a combined 6-16.

Tailback Hayden McCrate and quarterback Carter Blake are offensive standouts. Sawyer Moore sparks the defense.

Cambridge (3-2)

at Martins Ferry (1-4)

The Bobcats were drilled 45-14 by Bellaire last week after leading 14-13 midway through the second quarter as they visit Purple Rider Stadium inside the Dave Bruney Football Complex. Two pick-sixes led to the turnaround.

The Purple Riders broke into the win column with a 38-7 triumph over visiting Weir. The Red Riders led 7-0.

Tailback George Hulsey accounted for four touchdwns, three of them coming on the ground. Baron Lucey recorded an interception.

Federal Hocking (0-3)

at Bridgeport (0-4)

Something has to give when the Bulldogs welcome the Lancers visit Perkins Field inside Bill Jobko Stadium.

While Bridgeport had to cancel last week’s game with Conotton Valley due to COVID-19 and a lack of available players Federal Hocking was also idle. The Lancers have scored just eight points and have been shutout 93-0 in their last two outings.

The Bulldogs were led by Aiden Tarr in their last contest, a 41-20 sertback to Madonna. They have scored at least 14 points in each of their four games.

Valley (0-4)

at Beallsville (1-3)

The Blue Devils entertain the Lumberjacks in Monroe County.

Beallsville defeated Hundred two weeks ago for its lone win.

Brandon Louden is the Blue Devils leading offensive threat.

SATURDAY

Barnesville (3-1)

at Steub. Catholic (2-3)

The Shamrocks visit Harding Stadium to meet the host Crusaders on Reno Field.

Barnesville’s versatile Spencer Bliss continued his outstanding season as he scored touchdowns three different ways — TD run, TD reception and kickoff return.

Quarterback CJ Hannahs had a career night against River while Owyn Wise ran for a career-high 146 yards.

Defensively, Taison Starr and Gavin Carpenter stood out last week.

Steubenville Catholic has been on a rollercoaster of a season, alternating losses and wins.

The Crusaders lost 36-6 to Windham last week.
