Red Devils still undefeated with win against Brooke

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Brooke and St. Clairsville waged a back-and-forth offensive battle through six innings Tuesday night at Memorial Park.

When the Bruins struck, the Red Devils would answer as the two teams traded narrow leads throughout the six-inning contest that was called because of darkness.

In the end, the Red Devils did just enough to remain unbeaten, improving to 8-0 with an 8-7 victory against Brooke (6-4).

St. C.’s offensive firepower through its first seven games had been consistent, with four of the team’s top hitters connecting at .500 or better.

The team banged out eight runs on 12 hits Tuesday as all parts of the lineup contributed.

Brooke led 7-5 entering the home half of the sixth as the umpires alerted both coaches that the current half inning of play would be the final one, regardless of the score.

The Devils had one final chance to preserve their perfect mark. Leave it to the bottom of the order to get things going.

No. 8 hitter Niko Jacob led off with a single to left, followed by Rowan Mellott lining a single into center. That set up leadoff hitter Braylen Blomquist with a perfect opportunity.

Blomquist dropped a perfect bunt down the left side, with his speed allowing the senior to beat the throw to first.

What could have been a sacrifice at minimum gave the hosts bases loaded with zero outs.

Marcus Bush, who finished with four RBI, then ripped a grounder up the middle that scored both Jacob and Mellott.

Hunter Hoffman next drove a fly ball to right that appeared to result in the winning run scored on a sacrifice fly. But Brooke’s coaching staff checked the call and it was determined that the go-ahead runner didn’t tag up before the catch.

Down to their final out, Brody Saunders singled home the winning run two batters later, sending the St. C. bench into a frenzy.
