Steubenville Catholic falls to Wheeling Central 13-7 at home

STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville Catholic Crusaders couldn’t quite match the offense of the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights on Friday evening, the Knights scoring with aplomb in a 13-7 road victory.

In a busy day for the Wheeling Central bats, Seth Cover knocked in three runs, while Eli Tucker had four hits- a single, two doubles and a triple- in driving in two. Zayne Rosnick, fresh off his OVAC championship MVP performance Thursday, tripled and drove in a pair. Koy Lipinski and Luke Tiu each had RBI knocks of their own.

Seth Brodegard picked up the win for the Knights, twirling the pill for 4.2 innings of impressive relief work, striking out a baker’s dozen and walking none.

Kody Carver and Brayden Rauch each had two RBI for the Crusaders, Carver doubling as part of a four-hit effort.

This was the regular season finale for Wheeling Central, which starts sectionals next week.

East Fairmont 5, 9 inn.

GLEN DALE — The Monarchs and visiting Bees played nine innings but still couldn’t come up with a winner as the game was called due to darkness.

Lex Wilhelm had a single and home run that chased in three runs. Hayden Gaiser singled three times and knocked in a run , while Isaac Koontz singled twice and Mason Markonich had a pair of one-base raps and an RBI.

Jefferson County Christian 10, Wellsville 8

MINGO JUNCTION — Ben Adams went the distance, striking out 13, and tripled for the Royals on his way to picking up his seventh win of the season against the Tigers.

Rob Henderson chipped in with a double and single. Carson Duvall had two singles.

The Royals are now 13-6-1.

SOFTBALL

River 6, Fort Frye 5

SARDIS — Ava Wohnhas has had quite a week thus far. The River freshman struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter Friday in the Pilots win over the visiting Cadets. She also belted a grand slam homer in the bottom of the fifth for what turned out to be the game-winning tallies.

Lynn Jones led off the inning with a bunt single. Kelsey Harlan and Courtney Wisvari each walked to load the bases and Wohnhas sent a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left.

The Pilots improved to 11-10.

BARNESVILLE — The visiting Purple Riders (17-4) pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the eighth in the first game and put up five tallies in the fifth inning of the second game en route to their twinbill sweep of the Shamrocks on the Memorial Park diamond.

In the opener, Averi Hughes drove in five runs with four singles and Grace Lucas singled twice and tripled to knock in a run. Maddie Lucas singled twice and tripled.

Maddie Schaffer singled twice and homered to account for three RBI for Barnesville. Payton Dudzik singled and belted a solo homer. Kylie Powell, Ellie Thompson and Abigail Johnson all had two singles, with Johnson recording an RBI. Jayln Skinner singled in two runs.

In the nightcap, Snedeker drove in four runs with two singles and a home run. Hughes contributed a two-run single and Danielle L:ude singled twice. Winning pitcher Maddie Lucass helped herself with an RBI single. She fanned two, walked one and scattered seven singles.

Schaffer had two singles and Kylie Powell a two-run base hit. Thompson singled in a run.

Shadyside 7, Bellaire 1

ST. JOE — Josie Greenwood singled and doubled to drive in three runs and Makayla Faulkner singled thrice for the visiting Tigers.

Arianna Saxton struck out 10, walked one and spaced out four hits.

Garaway 3

SUGARCREEK — The Huskies received a double, home run and three RBI from Olivia Tonkovich in their win over the host Pirates. Aubrey Wood doubled in a run and Mikayla Pelegreen singled and tripled.

Emma Skinner went the first five innings, fanning three, walking none and giving up five hits.

Magnolia 8,

Madonna 7, 8 inn.

WEIRTON — The Blue Dons, which finished with as many wins this season (17) as they had in the previous two combined, suffered a tough loss to the Blue Eagles in a Class A Region 1, Section 1 sectional tournament consolation bracket elimination game at Starvaggi Park.

Madonna fell behind 4-1 and rallied to take a 7-4 lead in the fifth, but the Blue Eagles’ Madeline Delaney blasted what ended up being a game-deciding three-run homer in the sixth.

For their trouble, they earned another shot at state-ranked Wheeling Central in the sectional final, needing to beat the Maroon Knights twice.

Magnolia’s Mallory McDiffitt continued to chew up innings for her team, picking up another complete game victory, striking out six.

Madonna sophomore hurler Kendall Ryan concluded her solid campaign with three strikeouts.

North Marion 3

RACHEL — Hayden Hughes singled four times and pitched into the seventh as the visiting Monarchs doubled up the Huskies. He fanned five and walked a like number before giving way to Michael Clemons.

Donovan Jones swatted a solo home run while Mason Markonich and Hayden Knapp each singled twice and drove in a run.

SOFTBALL

Union Local 12, Bellaire 11

MORRISTOWN — The Jets plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to outscore the visiting Big Reds.

Laken Vinskovich singled twice and drove in two runs for Union Local. Alli Kellaway knocked in two runs with a trio of singles. Myah Martin plated a pair of runs with two singles. Lauren also singled twice, driving in one.

Kylie Stidd struck out seven and walked one in a route-going performance.

Marissa Pacifico singled twice and drove in two runs for Bellaire. Majestique Jackson and Callieigh Holt each singled twice, with Jackson recording a run batted in. Emilee Menendez doubled and tripled.

Harrison Central 14,

Buckeye Local 4

CONNORVILLE — The visiting Huskies tallied half-a-dozen runs in the second inning and then tacked on five in the top of the seventh to win going away over the Panthers.

Kara Blackburn drove in three runs for Harrison Central. Pelegreen doubled three times and tripled to drive in two runs, while Kaylie Banal singled twice and doubled to knock in a pair of runs.

Monroe Central 9,

Waterford 1

WATERFORD — Brooklyn Grubb slugged a three-run double to key the visiting Seminoles by the Wildcats.

Karlie Haslam singled and doubled to drive in two runs. Ryleigh Winland singled in two runs.
