Traffic stop in St. C. yields bulk meth, fentanyl and other drugs

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — City police reported some significant drug arrests on Nov. 4.

According to a release from Chief Matt Arbenz, at about 1:37 a.m. officers with the St. Clairsville Police Department made a traffic stop on a pickup truck with Mississippi license plates seen driving left of center on South Marietta Street. Upon speaking with the occupants, officers reportedly observed “criminal indicators” from the driver and passengers.

The driver of the vehicle, Frank Schofro of Pascagoula, Mississippi, denied the officers consent to search the vehicle and K-9 Ruger was deployed to sniff the vehicle. The dog reportedly gave a positive indication of the odor of drugs.

In the release, Arbenz said officers began searching the vehicle and located a bulk amount of suspected methamphetamine in numerous packages and locations, as well as suspected fentanyl, various pills and other illegal substances. Officers also reportedly located numerous used hypodermic syringes, meth pipes and other illegal drug paraphernalia.

Also in the vehicle were three passengers identified as Tiffany Swindle of Natchez, Mississippi, Hayley Pendly of Gulfport, Mississippi, and Michael Hester of Gauter, Mississippi. All four occupants were arrested and taken to the Belmont County Jail, where they were booked on charges including felony drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of drug abuse instruments.

Schofro, Swindle and Hester have preliminary hearings set for Jan. 9 before Belmont County Western Division Judge Eric Costine. Pendly was not listed in court reports Thursday.
