WHEELING — The Wheeling Symphony’s Orchestra 2023-24 season will come to a close at their CONTACT concert, featuring long-time collaborators and award-winning trio Time for Three.

Time for Three’s first performance with a symphony orchestra was alongside the WSO in 2004. Now, the recent Grammy-winning trio will join the symphony again at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Capitol Theatre.

Grammy and Emmy-winning ensemble Time For Three showcases their talents across genres, including classical music, Americana and singer-songwriter. They create a unique musical landscape that immerses audiences in a musical experience that merges various eras, styles and traditions of Western music.

Time for Three consists of Charles Yang and Nicolas “Nick” Kendall playing the violin and providing vocals with Ranaan Meyer playing the double bass and also adding vocals. The three combine their instruments and voices to establish a distinct voice of expression that resonates with listeners.

Time for Three has a longstanding history of collaboration with contemporary classical composers and continues to thrive. Their most recent commission, “Contact,” composed by Pulitzer Prize winner Kevin Puts, premiered with the San Francisco Symphony and The Philadelphia Orchestra in the summer of 2022.

This piece, alongside Jennifer Higdon’s “Concerto 4-3,” was released on Deutsche Grammophon under the album “Letters for the Future.” Conducted by Xian Zhang, the album reached the Billboard Top 10 Classical Recordings charts and garnered a nomination for an Opus Klassik award. The album also won a Grammy in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo Category.

Apart from the unique musical blend of Time for Three, Friday’s concert will feature the “musician’s choice” piece of the season: Brahms’ Third Symphony. The work that is equal parts bombastic, somber and gorgeous is by composer Arlene Sierra and is part of the League of American Orchestras’ Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program.

“I am so excited to conclude our 2023-24 Capitol Concert Series with CONTACT with Time for

Three and a commissioned piece by Arlene Sierra,” said WSO Music Director John Devlin. It is a wonderful opportunity for Time for Three to return to where their relationship with the symphony orchestra began.”

WSO Executive Director Sonja Thoms described the Masterworks program as a great balance of the “orchestral tradition” of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 and the “innovative energy” of Time for Three’s performance of Kevin Puts’ Contact.

“This program is a wonderful way to cap off an amazing 2023-2024 season!” added Thoms.

The WSO’s partnership with Arlene Sierra is part of the League of American Orchestras’ Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The nationalconsortium ensures that new works by women composers, each commissioned by the League, will be infused in orchestra seasons with multiple performances throughout the country.

“Being selected for this project is an incredible honor, placing us amongst the ranks of the nation’s finest orchestras in terms of artistic quality and their commitments to progress within our industry,” added Devlin.
