CADIZ — High winds, heavy rainfall and threatening lightning strikes on Monday couldn’t stop Stephanie Birney from announcing the names of those who will reign over the 172nd-annual Harrison County Fair.

Birney, the 2018 Harrison County Junior Fair queen, announced Joyce Barr was queen during the event at the Birney Memorial Building, Dillon Dodds, 2018 king, pinned on the royalty sash while Barr was crowned by Birney.

The queen was selected from among five candidates, including Katherine Everhart, Riley Eberhart, Addie Edwards and Morgan Garrett.

Barr, 18, is the daughter of Clint and Alice Barr. A graduate of Harrison Central High School, she has been a member of the Harrison Central FFA, a member of the Cadiz Ranchers 4-H for 11 years, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the school’s Thespian troupe and participated in musicals.

Zebakiah Fisher, 17, a member of Freeport Friends 4-H for eight years and son of Allen and Jen Bardall, is the king. Ellis Jackson, who is in his first year in 4-H in the Royal Riders, is the prince. He took a breeding and market goat, market hog and market ducks in his first year. He is the son of Jason and Abigail Jackson. Mallorie Dean, 10, a member of the Tri-County Show Stoppers, is the princess. She raised a feeder calf and completed a cooking project. She is the daughter of Dustin and Tonya Dean.

The Cloverbuds, all 18 of them, repeated the 4-H pledge with those in attendance and put their hands over their heart for the Pledge to the Allegiance.

Dylan Wagner, a Green Valley 4-H member for eight years, discussed his trip to Washington, D.C., for Focus. Those attending visited the House of Representatives, went to see the historic monuments and enjoyed the historical sights. He will be a junior at Harrison Central this year.

The Lucille Reed Most Outstanding 4-H’er Award was awarded to Barr. She excelled in her skill awards and in many other departments. Reed had a daughter in 4-H, was a 4-H leader and a key leader through her many years of involvement before her death, but has left a legacy for one 4-H member each year.
