I-470 west reopens Sunday after semi crash
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The westbound lanes of Interstate 470 are open again from Wheeling to St. Clairsville after a commercial vehicle overturned and lost its load early Sunday.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Burd, the accident happened around 8:30 a.m. He said a tractor-trailer traveling east rounded the curve just east of where I-470 splits off from Interstate 70 in St. Clairsville, traveled out of control and overturned into the westbound lanes. Burd said the driver and passenger of the truck both were transported to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital by Cumberland Trail Fire District for treatment of “minor” injuries.
Burd said the load did not contain any hazardous materials. At about 2 p.m., Burd said he expected the westbound lanes to remain closed for several more hours while workers recover the load. He said the tractor-trailer will then have to be set upright and removed from the scene.
A dispatcher later confirmed the lanes had reopened around 4:30 p.m.
Burd noted that the Ohio Department of Transportation set up a detour in Ohio, and a second detour was established in Wheeling.
