Gulf Oil Spill

Dear Editor:

It is said the memory is the second thing to go as one ages; one of your frequent contributors illustrates this with his latest rant concerning the EPA.

Asserting the cause of the Gulf oil spill disaster is EPA regulation shows a total lack of memory of pre-regulation days….the orange creeks full of junk cars and appliances, the bragging of midnight shift mill workers about toxic chemical release to down-river water supplies, the rabbit and briar “reclamation” of the coal companies….

A lack of regulatory oversight – courtesy of the Bush years – is a major factor in BP’s fouling of the Gulf (and the East Coast once the oil reaches the Gulf Stream). Most observers describe the previous administration’s regulators in terms of “being in bed with BP.”

Another memory lapse accounts for his assertion that Ohio Valley industry was destroyed by regulation; the fact that local corporations sold out, first to out-of-town profiteers and later to foreign concerns seems to have escaped his notice. Most of us remember that Wheeling Steel is now owned by the Russians!

Our president’s response to the Gulf situation, as well as his promotion of Green policies, was also a target for the writer’s squealing. He, along with many self-proclaimed conservatives, has forgotten that preserving and protecting the gifts we’ve been given used to be a major part of conservatism.

The contributor in question makes up for his deficient memory with negative adjectives – “stupid, fanatic, stooge, con man”, etc…..Grandma always said the first chicken to cackle laid the egg!
