Memories of the Bellaire Bridge

Dear Editor, I graduated from Bellaire High School in 1974. I remember walking across the (former toll) bridge to West Virginia when the teachers had their 90-minute lunch meeting. It was fun. I also remember the toll-taker ringing the bell every time he took a toll. There was also a billboard in West Bellaire advertising the bridge as the quickest way to Pittsburgh. When they took the approach down on the Bellaire side, it was called “progress.” It was inconvenience. Since 1976, when the family moved to Beckley, W.Va., I have been back several times. It is sad to see ...

Supporting our local social workers

Dear Editor, March is Social Work Month, and as faculty in Ohio University Eastern’s Social Work Program, we’re excited to celebrate the efforts and impact of social workers in our communities and around the world. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Empowering Social Workers.” One way to do this is to increase their salaries. Our nation needs social workers more than ever. The United States is grappling with an opioid addiction crisis that has cut across all regions, races, and economic levels. Homelessness is on the rise, according to the National Alliance to End ...

Do Something!

Dear Editor, I am a staunch Democrat. I love what we stand for and I love Joe Biden. I don’t think we can sit idly by and let Trump win every primary. I am urging all of us Democrats to switch and vote in the Republican primaries to vote for Haley and then vote for Joe in the General Election in the fall. We must do everything in our power to stop Trump because as Liz Cheney recently warned, Trump won’t leave office if he’s elected to a second term. Patricia Meyer Powhatan Point

Ohio 7 plan foolish

Dear Editor, The proposal to reinforce the overpass of State Route 7 over Bridgeport, OH is ludicrous. To block the “Gateway West” (National Road/U.S. 40) with mud and concrete is bizarre. Think about this. The ‘Holy’ Native Americans, Mingo, Delaware, Iroquois (et.al) Nations, in their “Spirit,” I believe would believe they should have not been fooled and fought harder in the day. Government needs notice of a new activism for righteousness. No mortal can “save the planet”. That gallant thought is as foolish as this proposal. Every native here, who loves ...

Compassion

Dear Editor, I have been accused by Democrats of lacking compassion for the illegals! Let me ask them where is there compassion for legal American citizens? Joe Biden and corrupt Democrats have allowed over 10 million illegals into our country without any vetting! Many of these are gang members, people released from jails and people they do not want in their own countries. We have had tens of thousands or more citizens robbed, beaten and even killed by these illegals. The most recent was Laken Riley, a student at Augusta University College of Nursing. They have arrested Jose ...

Dear Editor, I would like to express my gratitude and extend my best wishes to Sergeant Beth Scales who recently retired from the Martins Ferry Police Department following nearly 31 years of exemplary service to the community and Ohio Valley. Sergeant Scales graduated from the Eastern Ohio Law Enforcement Training Academy on February 12th, 1993, and on that same day began her long and illustrious career as an officer with the Martins Ferry Police Department under then chief of police William Patsche and Mayor Carl Mamone. Sergeant Scales was later appointed to the position of ...
