Showing teachers appreciation

Dear Editor, The teacher education department at Ohio University Eastern would like to invite community members to join us in publicly thanking area educators for their commitment and dedication to students over the past year. As part of Ohio University’s Patton College of Education, we are grateful for the experiences, expertise, and wisdom that professional educators share with our teacher candidates. On a daily, weekly, and semesterly basis, our students benefit from the guidance, mentoring, and advice that professional educators offer — in their classrooms, with their own ...

Wishing Chief McFarland the best

Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to respectfully express my gratitude to former Martins Ferry Police Chief John McFarland for his outstanding service throughout his 29-year career in law enforcement, in particular for his work and dedication to the city of Martins Ferry since joining the force in 1995. And for his service as chief of police for the city in 2011 until his recent retirement. Chief McFarland, a lifelong resident of the city, graduated from Martins Ferry High School, where he was honored for his athletic prowess by his induction into the Martins Ferry ...

Shelter supported

Dear Editor, I attended the Belmont county commissioners meeting, April 19, 2023. As the Commissioners read the new business, it was announced that the county will be moving forward with building a desperately needed, new animal shelter. I have been waiting and praying for this decision for years. I was appalled to learn that absolutely no questions were asked and no interest was shown about this endeavor. Instead, this joyous announcement was overshadowed by a group of disgruntled volunteers, previous employees and their friends. Their spokesperson read an extremely lengthy ...

Be Proactive about Conservative Values

Dear Editor, I discuss politics often with individuals in and out the Ohio Valley and find that many of those who oppose conservative positions, those of which I embrace, have no compunction about tossing out insults, particularly on social media. Of course, I give as good as I get. But the thing is, I understand the left’s desires on issues like gun control, abortions, trans rights, tax the rich-and so on. I understand where they are coming from, it’s just I don’t agree. However, those with whom I “discuss” these issues don’t care to take the time to understand a ...

Murder and the Bible

Dear Editor, It is a sad commentary that I write today. A woman kills 6 people at a Christian school. A young male employee kills several people at a bank. Two juveniles (one age 12) kills three other juveniles. And senseless murder and mayhem goes on in our largest cities. What do they all have in common? In a majority of the cases, they are all younger than 30 years of age. Something evil has happened to generation Z. We look at the influence of social media. We decry the hand held phones. We shake our heads at the video games which give no value to life. The ...

Lesson of the Cross

Dear Editor, With Easter upon us I felt a need to comment on one of the great lessons of that day. The question is this. How can we have assurance we will not go to hell? The answer lies in the exchange between Jesus and the thief on the cross. But before I go on let me first tell you what isn’t an assurance. It certainly isn’t “love is love” or “God is love” because that love doesn’t acknowledge the sacrifice, righteousness nor Holiness made by the God/man Jesus Christ. That love makes the person their own God and says Jesus loves me as I live my own lifestyle. People ...
