Democrat giveaway

Dear Editor, The Governor and Lt. Governor of Ohio are complaining, rightly so, that Ohio will not receive its fair share of the Biden $1.9 trillion bailout bill. Since Ohio is not a Democratic run state that has not given the farm away “yet,” we will get to subsidize with our tax dollars the blue states that have given exorbitant retirement plans, that they cannot afford, to their loyal followers. Our Senator, Sherrod Brown, voted YES for this bill knowing full well how the money was going to be divided up! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out where Brown’s ...

What is ‘first’ in America?

Dear Editor, I look forward to, and enjoy reading, the ‘Opinion Page’ here. But often, I find myself needing to rebut, or flat out repudiate some political expressions here. I’m often pleased to read the expressions of gratitude towards civic minded and care-giving people of our area. Great use of this format. Thanks to The Times Leader for that. The caustic political divides of these days are deeper and darker than at any time I can recall in my lifetime. And I was witness to the Pittsburgh, Hill Street riots of the late ‘60s (and happy the Fifth Street, PAT bus was not ...

State should provide local health care

Dear Editor, I am a resident of Belmont County. Hospitals in Martins Ferry and Bellaire, Ohio, have closed over the past three years. Recently it became public knowledge in the local paper that West Virginia University has acquired Barnesville Hospital in Barnesville, Ohio. My question is why? As a taxpayer in the Great State of Ohio, I have a burning question: how is it that West Virginia University is taking over our community hospitals in Southeastern Ohio? I pay taxes in Ohio that support seven medical schools (six MD and one DO) in the state of Ohio, so why is it that none of ...

The passing of a national icon

Dear Editor, Although long-time bellicose, controversial, but very popular long-time mega radio talk show host extraordinaire Rush Hudson Limbaugh III has now passed away, his impact on the Republican Party and the conservative movement as well as our great nation, has been felt for several decades, and, sadly, will be the case for, undoubtedly, many years to come. The epoch of Rush Limbaugh has spawned many “Limbaugh disciples” throughout the electronic and print media, as well as in government/politics, which has been greatly responsible for the political divide in our nation ...

Tax the rich

Dear Editor, The Republicans are woeful about $4 trillion in debt ran up in recent years. (The GOP conveniently fail to point out that this debt was primarily due to Bush and Trump tax cuts for the rich.) According to the Senate Republicans we couldn’t possibly afford almost 2 trillion more for Biden’s American Rescue stimulus plan. The Senate GOP now claims our debt problem of a total of 6 trillion (about the same as at the end of World War II) is way beyond our means. Is there an adequate source of income, without serious inflation, to finance all necessary government ...

Culture change

Dear Editor, In my seventh decade of this life it has become more difficult to accept change — especially “Culture Change!” Most children are resilient; the elderly, not so much. I recall my first day of school. I was more “resistant” than “resilient.” I can only imagine how terrified I would have been in 1954 with everyone wearing masks at South School in Martins Ferry, Ohio. If my mother had just read a Dr. Seuss story to me, I could have been better prepared. But as I now understand that is bigotry? Well, it must be something bad these days! Anyway, ...
