RALLY FOR LIFE SCRAMBLE

I wrote in this space a few weeks ago about an upcoming scramble to benefit the Beallsville Rally for Life.

I received a wonderful email from event organizer Robin Harper, informing me that the event was a huge success.

The scramble, which was held at the 9-hole Switzerland of Ohio Country Club, attracted 15 teams.

According to Harper, it’s believed that the event generated some $3,000 to benefit cancer patients in Monroe County. More specifically, the money will go to the gas card program, which helps individuals get to their appointments and different things.

The impressive thing about Beallsville is the entire school and community come together to help each other in this initiative. It goes by the slogan, ‘an individual doesn’t get cancer, a community does.’

According to Harper, a formal date of when the proceeds of the Rally for Life will be presented hasn’t set yet, but it will be held before the school year ends.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Kupfer Brothers Logging event was held on Sunday, May 3 as an 18-hole stroke play event.

Ironically, Roger Kupfer captured the event’s medal division title with a round of 71. Art Lightner was second with a 72. Bob Geen (76) and Mike Crow (78) were third and fourth, respectively. Paul Alig Sr., Tom Mitchell and Dave Scollick (78) rounded out the top five.

In the handicap scoring, Dave Stauver was the winner with a round of 65. Lloyd Carmichael finished second a shot back and Paul Alig Jr. was third with a 68.

Russ Travis was fourth in 71, while Jerry Daugherty and Dick Moore tied for fifth with a 71.

COLLEGE GOLF

Wheeling Jesuit’s Kasey Frazier – the Mountain East Conference Player of the Year – finished her season with a solid showing in the NCAA Division II regional. She finished 13th in the individual standings. She fired a final round of 75. She has a round of 80 on Sunday and then posted a 78 in the second round.

West Liberty’s golf season came to a close on Thursday with the final round of the NCAA Divison II Atlantic/East Regional at the Longaberger Golf Club near Zanesville.

The Hilltoppers finished 10th in the 20-team event, posting a score of 932. The top individual for West Liberty was Matt Iceton. He turned in rounds of 74, 73 and 80. He was a shot better than Cory Hoshor. Ike Judy (240), Alston Spears (246) and Joey Cilone (246) rounded out the squad.

One other note on collegiate golf, we’ve learned that former Wheeling Park Patriot Thadd Obecny has opted to transfer. After playing his freshman season at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Obecny has signed on to play with Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach.
