OFF THE TEE: 31st annual Sands Electric event held

One of the area’s most prestigious and long-running private tournaments was held last Sunday at Belmont Hills Country Club.

The 31st annual Sands Electric Company Golf Classic drew a full field of 28 golfers at Belmont Hills Country Club.

The teams – outside of the defending champion – are drawn randomly.

The winners, who shot nines of 35 and 33 for an impressive 4-under, 68 was the duo of Jim Mahute and Chris Baugh. Five shots back in second were Bill Glitch and Roy Heidelbach.

Third place went to Bill Mumley and Bob Yazrombek, who shot a 74. Kurt Frasnelly and Dan Angalich shot a 75, while Jimmy Baugh and Mike Vargo posted a 76.

The balance of the scoreboard looked like this: Gary Cunningham and Joe Klempa, 77; John Timko and John Pokas, 77; Mike Mason and Mike Hajdukovich, 77; Craig Bowman and Ted Stupak, 77; Roy Glitch and Ted Ducker, 79; Steve Wojcik and Rob Schmidt, 79; Tom Kellas and Chad Baugh, 81; Bob McConnaughy and Todd Schambach, 81; Kelly Rine and Mike Egri, 82.

Along with the overall prizes, there were also awards for closest to the pin. Steve Wojcik won two of those, while Angalich and Chris Baugh each won one.

The skins game winners were: Mahute/Baugh (3), Mumley/Yazrombek, Baugh/Vargo, Bowman/Stupak, Kellas/Baugh, Wojcik/Schmidt.

There were also two prizes for best dressed. Those went to Heidelbach and Klempa.

Bill Glitch once again served as the tournament director.

SAFFIELD SCRAMBLE

The inaugural Richard Saffield Memorial Scramble was held last Tuesday at BecWood Hills Golf Course with 48 players in the field.

The championship went to the team of Tom Stillmak, Bob Laipple, Mike Green and John Bailey, who split the $500 prize.

The runner-up team was comprised of John Becca, George Becca, Kenny Brinkley and Tom Willian.

There were also several skill prizes awarded during the event.

The longest drive on #5 went to Jack Ralston, while David Midda was the long driver on #17.

The closest to the pin winners were: Rich Miluka (No. 4), John Bailey (No. 8), Tom Young (No. 14) and Roger Kupfer (No. 16).

MEN’S COLLEGE GOLF

St. Clairsville High graduates Adam Jeffries and Zach Keylor, ironically, finished in a tie for seventh at the Malone University Fall Classic held last weekend. The classmates, who now play for Alderson Broaddus and Malone, respectively, both signed for scores of 148.

Keylor led Jeffries by two shots after the first day when he shot a 2-under, 70. Jeffries shot rounds of 72 and 76.

Another former Red Devil, Seth Vannoy, finished in a tie for 14th overall with a two-day score of 151. Vannoy also plays for Alderson Broaddus.

Buckeye Trail product Jed Burga, who plays at Ohio Valley University, placed 25th in the field with a round of 157.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF

Wheeling Jesuit’s Kasey Frazier continued her brilliant young season by taking medalist honors at the Michael Corbett Fall Classic, which was played at the Lake Shore Country Club.

She shot a 2-over for the tournament (146), which was four shots clear of her nearest competitor.

Martins Ferry graduate Kaitlyn Bliss, who plays for West Liberty, finished in a tie for 41st place.

She improved her second-round score by 10 shots, which allowed her to make a serious jump on the overall leaderboard.

SENECAVILLE SENIOR LEAGUE

The league continued play last week with Dave Schultice and Gary Mayberry recording the closest to the pins. The low net and low gross crowns went to Hannahs and Hannahs.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLE

  • The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its ninth annual golf outing on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Fairway River Links. Tee off is at 8 a.m. and the event will feature a shotgun start

The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per team of four. The cost includes cart, lunch and beverages during the scramble and a dinner afterwards.
