Comis makes his mark on the big stage

There are many hallowed halls in major college football.

Notre Dame Stadium is certainly amongst the premier places in the United States for major college football.

Last week, an Ohio Valley native got to experience it up close and personal.

Madonna graduate Ross Comis made the most of his opportunity when called upon for Massachusetts.

Comis, who led the Blue Dons to a West Virginia Class A State Championship, came into the game for the Minutemen when the game got out of hand in the fourth quarter and was impressive.

The red-shirt freshman completed all eight of his passes for 69 yards and he threw touchdown.

UMASS’ starting quarterback is Blake Frohnapfel, whose father, Steve, is a St. John Central graduate. His grandparents still reside in Colerain.

DIVISION I – FBS

NAJEE MURRAY, Kent State – Steubenville graduate had a tackle and three pass break ups from his corner spot in last week’s loss to Marshall.

SHAQ PETTEWAY, West Virginia – Steubenville graduate posted three tackles and a sack in last week’s win against Maryland.

CONNOR ARLIA, Kent State – Madonna product played in the Golden Flashes’ loss to Marshall last week.

DIVISION I – FCS

AKIL BLOUNT, Florida A&M – Linsly product led the Rattlers with 11 tackles in their loss to Tennessee State.

MARK DODD, Lafayette – Linsly product posted eight tackles and a sack in the Leopards’ victory last week.

DIVISION II

MATT KINNICK, West Virginia State – St. Clairsville graduate completed 12-of-26 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s loss.

COREY ERNEST, West Liberty – St. Clairsville graduate started at left guard in the Hilltoppers’ win against Urbana last week.

MIKE BERARDI, West Liberty – John Marshall grad started at right tackle in the Hilltoppers’ win against Urbana.

COLE STEPHEN, West Liberty – St. Clairsville graduate appeared in last week’s game against Urbana.

MARCUS SCHUMACHER, West Liberty – Monroe Central graduate posted seven tackles, including one for loss in last week’s win.

DAREE GOODWIN, West Liberty – Wheeling Park product caught 5 passes for 115 yards and 3 touchdowns last week against Urbana. He was named MEC Offensive Player of the Week.

STEPHEN ROGALSKI, West Virginia Wesleyan – Magnolia product caught 2 passes for 11 yards in last week’s game.

TANNER WRIGHT, Glenville State – River graduate punted six times for a 42.5 yard average. He had a long of 51 yards and three punts were downed inside the 20.

ZACH PHILLIPS, Gannon – Wheeling Park product appeared in last week’s loss to Clarion.

GEREMY PAIGE, Gannon – Wheeling Park grad was second on his team with 13 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss.

DIVISION III

DALTON SECHREST, Marietta – Beallsville High product recorded five tackles in last week’s loss to Mt. Union.

JACOB CLARK, Muskingum – Shadyside High product started once again along the offensive line for the Muskies in their loss to Capital.

JONATHAN CARLIER, Waynesburg – Martins Ferry graduate posted two tackles in the Yellow Jackets’ loss to Bethany.

LESHAWN LUKE, Mt. Union – Steubenville grad posted four tackles and one for loss in the Purple Raiders’ win at Marietta.

DASHON REDMAN, Mt. Union – Steubenville product was charted for four tackles and a forced fumble.

MIKE FURDA, Mt. Union – Indian Creek grad posted three tackles and a quarterback hurry in last week’s victory.

ELLIOTT NERO, Mt. Union – Madonna product rushed six times for 40 yards in the Purple Raiders’ victory.

NICK ASTURI, Muskingum – River grad had a tackle in a loss to Capital.

BRENT WALTON, Capital – Pickerington Central grad was named OAC Player of the Week after rushing for 207 yards and three touchdowns last week.

COLLEGE GOLF

ADAM JEFFRIES, Alderson Broaddus – The St. Clairsville graduate posted rounds of 73 and 81 at the Division II Chicago Regional held earlier this week.

SETH VANNOY, Alderson-Broaddus – The St. Clairsville graduate signed for scors of 77 and 81 at the Division II Chicago Regional.

ZACH KEYLOR, Walsh – The St. Clairsville product posted rounds of 76 and 85 in the Division II Chicago Regional.

MEN’S SOCCER

ZACH OLIVER, Thiel – The St. Clairsville graduate has started nine-of-10 games and has recorded eight points, including two goals in those games.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

OLIVIA MYERS, Western Michigan – Belmont native finished the Indiana University tournament with a 1-2 record in singles play. It was her first tournament of the season.
