WHEELING -- Dick Edge and Dr. Dan Doyle have devoted much of their respective lives to the sport of wrestling. Now the two Ohio Valley natives are receiving the ultimate recognition for passionate and dedicated service to the mat sport. They are becoming Hall of Famers. The two will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame - West Virginia Chapter on Oct. 30 in Charleston. “When I first moved to Wheeling, it was Coach Edge who welcomed me as a new member of the Ohio Valley wrestling community. His fatherly advice guided me in the right direction in establishing my own ...

When is hot too hot for prep football?

BELLAIRE -- Prep football is back. Week 1 saw its share of surprises -- if surprises are possible in the opening weekend -- as well as some stellar performances. The hottest topic of the first weekend of games was just that -- the heat. Another round of mid-90 temps and punishing humidity greeted players, coaches and fans. And while the night games were toasty and yielded their share of expected player cramping, the afternoon contests turned into virtual survival tests. Linsly hosted Ohio powerhouse Mogadore Saturday in a 1:30 p.m. start while 23 hours later, Bellaire ...

Union Local makes early statement

While there were a lot of interesting storylines during the course of the opening weekend of high school football, to me the play of the Union Local Jets was amongst the most impressive. Bruce Stiles heaped all sorts of praise on his team during the pre-season and his players backed it up in a 48-8 victory against Monroe Central. Union Local doesn’t have a lot of “household” names, but they have solid football players. And on top of that, they have a big and talented offensive line, which paved the way for 402 yards rushing and an average per carry of 11.5 per rush. The ...

Grid coaches speak out on mercy rule

PARKERSBURG -- The Ohio High School Athletic Association implemented a football mercy rule in 2014. It keeps the clock running when a team is up by 30 or more points in the second half. Now after years of clamoring for a similar rule in West Virginia, the WVSSAC has adopted a rule change that will keep the game clock running during the fourth quarter if a team leads by 35 or more points. The "game-shortening rule" takes effect this fall. It gained the approval of a coaches committee this past spring. There are only six exceptions to the rule: An injured player, ...
