Vincent sparks Bridgeport boys to season-opening victory

BRIDGEPORT – Freshman Jaleel Vincent scorched the nets for a career-high 26 points Friday night as Bridgeport debuted with a 69-42 rout of visiting Beallsville on Frank Baxter Court inside John J. Havlicek Gymnasium.

Vincent knocked down 10 field goals, with half-a-dozen of them from behind the bonus arc. Jaki Threet added 12. AJ Gear and Coen Brinker evenly divided 16.

Thorn Stoffel led the Blue Devils with nine.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bellaire 75, Brooke 13

BROOKE – The Bellaire Big Reds bounced back from a loss Thursday to the Linsly Cadets with an imposing victory over the Brooke Bruins as part of the Brooke Tip-Off Tournament.

Bellaire’s Zara Harveth scored 24 points while Eliana Mason scored 13 and Aubree Hines scored 10.

For Brooke, Melia McCullough scored four points while Hope Bowman scored three.

Valley 53, Paden City 37

PADEN CITY – The Lumberjills started their season with a double-digit victory over the Wildcats.

Laken Dawson nailed four 3’s to lead Valley with 22 points. Winter Higgins scored 19, and Harli Rush scored eight for the victors.

Paden City was led by Ashton Wade with 16. She was joined in double-figures by Kimberly Burch who scored 10.

Notre Dame 41, Hundred 35

HUNDRED – The Hornets took a tough home loss against the Fighting Irish on Friday, though Hundred ended with notable performances from Summer Morris and Ashlynn Peters.

Morris scored 14 points to go with four assists and three rebounds in a well-rounded night. Peters scored 11 points, including knocking down one of Hundred’s two 3-pointers on the day. Peters added three steals and three rebounds. Leah Dean led the hornets in rebounds with eight to go with six points.

WRESTLING

Central Starts Strong

HEDGESVILLE — The Maroon Knight matmen made the trip here to take part in the annual Hedgesville Duals, which conclude today.

Central finished 4-1 on the day, posting wins over Hedgesville, North Marion, London Valley (Va) and Handley (VA).

Central’s Braxton Birch, Marshall Crow, Eli Tedrow, Wyatt Brady and Isaac Martin all finished 5-0, while Dom Asbury was 4-0.

The Maroon Knights will take part in five more duals today to wrap up the event.

Weir High Rolls By Brooke

Boys

WELLSBURG – Weir High rolled past Brooke 2,205 to 1,703 at Brooke 2 Lanes.

Jackson Parson fired a 246 game and a 436 series, while Shane Arnold had a 214 game and a 462 series for the Red Riders,

Darin Hilton had a 182 and a 306.

Buckeye sweeps Wheeling Central

WHEELING — The Panthers swept the matches from the Maroon Knights at the Dirty Dog Lanes Friday afternoon.

Buckeye Local’s Melissa Smith had the high series with a 315 to fuel the girls to a 1654-998 victory.

Wheeling Central’s Katana Baker had a 222 to lead the Knights.

The high individual game was posted by Brianna Kovalski, who knocked over 185 pins in the first game.

On the boys’ side, the Panthers picked up the win by a score of 1602-1471.

Buckeye Local’s Noah Jack posted a 374 for the high series, while Central’s Xavier Millhouse finished second individually with a 348 series. Millhouse got his day started with a 180, which was the high individual score.
