Four named to District 12 Basketball Hall of Fame

A quartet of high-scoring players who combined for nearly 7,400 career points in high school have been selected to the District 12 Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

Named to this year’s class are Ashley Holenka of Shadyside (Class of 2001) and Charity Street of Beallsville (Class of 2004) on the female side along with Bob Mroczkowski of Bridgeport (Class of 1983) and Nate Davis of Bellaire (Class of 2006) on the male side.

Those four will be honored at the Pepsi/District 12 All-Star Basketball Classic on Friday, April 5 at Buckeye Trail High School in Old Washington along with the two coaches announced last week — Michael ‘Mickey’ Blatnik of St. Clairsville and Dan Schwieterman of Shenandoah.

That brings the total number of honorees dating back to 2004 to 82, including 21 coaches, 30 female athletes, 30 male athletes and one contributor.

Here’s a look at the bios of the four players in the Class of 2024:

Ashley Holenka

(Shadyside High School, Class of 2001)

This talented Lady Tiger holds the Shadyside school record (girls or boys) with 1,723 career points.

Holenka culminated her prep career as a first team AP Division IV All-Ohio selection, averaging 21.6 points per game. She was also first team All-Eastern District, All-District 12 and All-OVAC Class 2A, earning “Player of the Year” honors in the Eastern District and District 12. Shadyside finished 12th in the final AP Division IV state poll that year.

As a sophomore, Holenka was honorable mention All-Ohio along with first team All-Eastern District, All-District 12 and All-OVAC. As a junior, she was a third team all-Ohio selection with a 26-point average, again earning first team All-Eastern District, All-District 12 and All-OVAC recognition.

She was a basketball walk-on at Oakland University in Michigan, playing all four years and earning Academic All-Mid Continent Conference honors.

Holenka was also a standout in softball and cross country.

In softball, she was a first team all-OVAC selection as a freshman and sophomore while in track, she set the school record in the 800 meters (2:25.3); finished fourth in the OHSAA Division III Regional in the 800 (2:25.79) to qualify for the state meet; was fifth in the regional in the 1600 (5:28.45); and placed second in the OVAC in the 800 (2:27.2) and 3200 (12:37.1).

Charity Street

(Beallsville High School, Class of 2004)

A four-year letterwinner, Street is the all-time girls’ leading scorer at Beallsville with 1,627 points.

After gaining honorable mention all-state honors as a junior, she was selected to the All-Ohio Division IV first team after averaging a lofty 24.2 points per game as a senior.

Street was a three-time first team All-OVAC Class A selection (honorable mention as a freshman); and was named to the All-Eastern District Division IV, All-District 12 Division IV and All-Pioneer Valley Conference first team on multiple occasions.

Street was also a standout volleyball and softball player at Beallsville.

In volleyball, she was a four-year letterwinner who was named first team All-OVAC Class A as a junior and senior, earning Player of the Year honors as a junior; and she was first team all-District 12 Division IV twice.

In softball, she again lettered all four years as a shortstop-pitcher, named first team All-OVAC and all-Pioneer Valley Conference all four years, first team all-East District Division IV and honorable mention All-Ohio Division IV as a senior.

She continued her basketball career at West Liberty University, scoring 1,092 points in three seasons, earning first team All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors as a sophomore and junior. After time off, she played her senior year at Ohio University Eastern.

Bob Mroczkowski

(Bridgeport High School, Class of 1984)

A key member of highly-successful back-to-back Bulldog teams from the 1980s, Mroczkowski finished his career with 1,487 points as he became only the third 1,000-point scorer in BHS history.| As a junior, he enjoyed a breakout season averaging 24,6 points per game and was honored with a second team All-Ohio Class A selection on the AP and UPI selections along with being named first team All-Eastern District Class A, All-District 12 Class A. All-OVAC Class AA and All-Valley “Small School”. That year, the Bulldogs made a deep run in the OHSAA Class A Tournament under Coach Jim ‘Dubie’ Dailer, winning the sectional and district championships and reaching the regional finals, first defeating Glouster Trimble (69-61) before falling to Buckeye Trail (65-51). Averaging 72 points per game, BHS also won the OVAC Class AA championship that season. “Mirch” continued to pour in the points as a senior, finishing with a 25.6 scoring average in leading the ‘Dogs to a 21-2 overall record, a Class A Sectional title and a spot berth in the Class A District where they lost to always-tough Hiland. Another impressive list of accolades followed, including first team All-Ohio Class A by both The Associated Press and United Press International, including “Player of the Year” honors on the UPI squad. He was also first team All-Eastern District Class A, All-District 12 Class A, All-Valley “Small School” and All-OVAC Class AA, named co-captain of the latter squad. He played in the OVAC All-Star Game and the OHSBCA North-South All-Star Game. Mroczkowski was inducted into the Bridgeport Wall of Fame in 2010 and again as part of the 1982-83 team in 2023.

Nate Davis

(Bellaire High School, Class of 2006)

A tremendous all-around athlete, Davis rewrote the basketball record book at Bellaire.

After helping Coach Gene Ammirante’s Big Reds reach the OHSAA Division III State Tournament in 2004, Davis led the Big Reds back to the regional in 2005 and to an undefeated regular season in 2006. He finished his prep career with 2,562 points, which ranks 11th in Ohio history (as of 2024). Davis was more than a scorer as he also grabbed 1,175 rebounds, which also ranks 11th in in the state annals, and he passed out more than 500 assists. During his senior campaign, Davis averaged 38.9 points per game en route to first-team All-Ohio Division III accolades. He was a finalist for Mr. Basketball and was the Eastern District, District 12 and OVAC Class 3A “Player of the Year”. He took part in both the Ohio North-South and Ohio-Kentucky All-Star games.

He was a four-time selection on the All-District 12, All-Eastern District and All-OVAC hoop squads. On the football field, Davis completed 454-of-925 passes for 7,345 yards and 81 touchdowns. As a sophomore, Davis guided the Big Reds to the Division IV state semifinals, throwing for 2,296 yards and 22 touchdowns. The Big Reds returned to the state semifinals in 2005 when Davis passed for 2,740 yards and 35 touchdowns. Davis was Ohio’s Division IV Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. He was a first-team All-Ohioan as both a junior and senior and earned second-team accolades as a sophomore. He was first-team All-OVAC three times and took part in both the Ohio North-South and OVAC All-Star games. Davis also lettered in baseball, helping the Big Reds to the regional championship in 2003 when he was the club’s every day catcher. As a senior, Davis went out for track and won the OVAC discus title with a toss of 140-9.

Davis played quarterback for three seasons at Ball State University, opting to forego his senior season to enter the NFL Draft. He passed for 9,233 yards and 74 touchdowns. He was named the Mid-American Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2008 and a first-team all-MAC selection. He was a finalist for the Manning Award and also the Ball State team MVP both as a sophomore and junior. As a junior, he led the Cardinals to a 12-0 record and berth in the MAC Championship Game. Davis was inducted into the Ball State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021.

Davis was selected in the fifth round by the San Francisco 49ers. He made the team as a rookie, but was released and later signed to the team’s practice squad in 2010. He also signed contracts with the Colts and Seahawks and has spent the last 12-13 years playing indoor/arena football, earning IFL Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2021.

He was inducted into the OVAC Hall of Fame in 2017.
