Martins Ferry girls conquer the Cadets

WHEELING — The Martins Ferry Purple Riders stacked up 10 runs in their game Thursday, securing a 10-5 victory on the road against the Linsly Cadets.

Riders head coach Jerry Magistro is not satisfied though.

“I can’t complain about 10 runs, but with the situations we found ourselves in I think we should’ve gotten more,” Magistro said. “And we’ve just got to learn whoever’s pitching, every pitcher is different. You’ve got to be patient at the plate.”

Maddie Lucas pitched a complete game and knocked in three runners, and Giana Chirpas smacked two doubles and drove in three RBI of her own in the victory.

Ferry scored three runs in the first and second innings to lurch ahead 6-1 early, and though Linsly was chipping away in the intermediate innings, trailing 7-4 after six, the Purple Riders put a seal on the game with three more in the top of the seventh.

“I thought we got some timely hits, that’s for sure. We had to be a little more patient with this pitcher at the plate. Some kids were out in front a lot on a lot of our hitting, but we ended up with a lot of good hits, and actually a lot of outs were hard-hit.”

Lucas struck out three for the Purple Riders, who collected 13 hits as a team. Lucas struck for three of them, as did Chirpas. Danielle Lude and Savannah Koller each tallied two hits.

“I thought we got some timely hits, that’s for sure,” Magistro said. “We had to be a little more patient with this pitcher at the plate. Some kids were out in front a lot on a lot of our hitting, but we ended up with a lot of good hits, and actually a lot of outs were hard-hit.”

For Linsly, Madison Applegarth went the distance on the mound and struck out five, though a couple errors in the early-goings set things off on the wrong foot for the homestanding Cadets.

“We made some defensive mistakes early, really uncharacteristic,” Linsly head coach Paul Recrosio said. “But we hit the ball hard and the girls played hard, they never stopped believing they could win. It just wasn’t the result that we hoped for and have come to expect. I’m proud of their grit, I’m proud of how they played.”

Linsly was dinged for three errors on the day, Martins Ferry one, but the majority of the miscues came in the first couple innings, the teams seeming to lock in as the game continued.

“I thought we played pretty decent defense, came up with some good plays- but so did they,” Magistro said. “Their left fielder caught some good balls. They’re a good team, so I thought we did well to come here and get a good win.”

Linsly’s Reagan Van Scyoc socked a solo home run to left center in the sixth inning, while Applegarth finished with two hits and two RBI. Alayna Cook had a two-bagger and an RBI.

“The energy, the attitude was where it needs to be,” Recrosio said. “A couple things just didn’t go our way. This is a game of failure, and today we just had a few too many. They’re a heck of a team, they lost a few folks from last year but they’re still a force to be reckoned with in the OVAC and I look forward to playing them again.”
