ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Ohio Valley Mall is celebrating back to school time with some fun activities.
A Back to School and Beyond Fair is slated from noon to 3 p.m. today at the mall. Students can “check out the latest styles that are hot for back to school 2019” during a fashion show set for 1 p.m., according to information from the mall.
Spokeswoman Candi Noble-Greathouse said the fashion show features several Ohio Valley students wearing outfits from retailers such as Macy’s, Marshalls, Rue 21and Buckle.
“They are Ohio Valley kiddos wearing fashions from our stores. Many picked outfits on their own. … They will be head-to-toe in clothes found at the mall,” Noble-Greathouse said.
In addition to the fashion show, there will be activities for children including face painting and balloon art. Tilt Studios will be playing games with the students, and Harmony House also will be on hand with information.
“We’re offering activities and excitement to send them on the right path while they’re headed off to school,” Noble-Greathouse said.
The mall held an event for teachers on Friday, offering the first 50 teachers to arrive a goodie bag containing coupons, samples and more. Those first 50 teachers also received a $10 Boscov’s gift card and a $10 Macy’s gift card.
The teachers also received snacks from Garfield’s and Great American Cookie Co. Also on hand were representatives of Regis salon, Macy’s and more, to talk to the teachers about new looks for the school year.
During this weekend, shoppers’ wallets will also get a break as the state’s sales tax is being waived through Sunday. This will help many families who are looking to purchase new clothes and school supplies to get ready for the new school year.
According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, the sales tax holiday ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
The following can be purchased free from sales and use tax during the holiday:
∫ Clothing that is priced at $75 or less;
∫ School supplies that are priced at $20 per item or less; and
∫ School instructional materials priced at $20 per item or less.
The tax department notes clothing is defined as any apparel suitable for general use. The tax break does not apply to accessories such as hair bows or jewelry.
Other items not eligible include those used in trade or business. Protective equipment, such as masks, helmets or protective gloves also are not eligible. Sewing items such as needles and yarns are not eligible. Sports or recreational equipment such as cleats, ballet shoes and mouthguards are not eligible, either.
The tax department states that belt buckles that are sold separate from a belt are not eligible, and neither are costume masks. Patches and emblems that are sold separately also cannot be purchased tax-free.
West Virginia does not have a tax-free holiday weekend planned for this year, according to an official with the state tax department.
