The Doris L. Kinney Memorial Golf Scramble was held, using a bestball scramble format. The duo of Art Lightner and Roger Kupfer prevailed with a 62. That was two shots better than Gary Mercer and Chris Bommer. Robbie Evans and Doug Miller were third with a 68. Nick Klamut and Bob McLaughlin fired a 70. OVAC Executive Secretary Tom Rataiczak and his football committee were delivered a major problem late last month. The conference braintrust needed to find a new home for Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game this July. The problem arose after Wheeling Island Stadium -- the annual home for the all-star clash -- was found to have some panels in decay. The St. Clairsville American Legion Post 159 baseball team advanced to its second consecutive state tournament last summer. Mike Muklewicz and his squad begin their season next month, but began the process of working toward the season last weekend when they held their inaugural golf scramble at Belmont Hills Country Club in St. Clairsville. Former Linsly star heading to JCU shrine

CLEVELAND -- A former Linsly School star has received the ultimate athletic honor. Bryan Fialkowski will be enshrined into the John Carroll University Hall of Fame this coming October. The Bridgeport native was a two-time all-OAC honoree while earning All-America accolades as a senior for the Blue Streaks. The 1997 Linsly grad was a four-year starter on the O-line for the University Heights-based football power. He established a school record for most games played in (42). WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB On April 30, the Ohio Valley Awards event was held. The 18-hole event was captured by Roger Kupfer, who shot a 67. He was four shots clear of both Rich Colley and Jay Davis. Bruce DeCrease and Art Lightner rounded out the top five, signing for a 72. In the handicap scoring, Bill Piccard won with a 63. Jim Ennis posted a 64, while Bill Kerns added a 65. WVU experiencing athletic greatness

WHEELING -- It's a great time to be a Mountaineer. That was the recurring theme Monday night as the WVU Coaches Caravan rolled into the River City Restaurant, attracting a crowd of nearly 300 Blue & Gold partisans. Coaching heavyweights Bob Huggins, Dana Holgorsen and Mike Carey were joined by golf coach Sean Covich, athletic director Shane Lyons and Tony Caridi, the voice of the Mountaineers, for a program spewing WVU athletic success stories.
